Within about 10 years of its founding in 2003, Theranos was valued at $9 billion and פאָרבעס named Holmes the youngest self-made woman billionaire in 2014.

Both Holmes and Theranos’ downfall began in 2015 after the וואנט סטריט דזשאָורנאַל revealed the company relied on other blood machines instead of their own device, known as the Edison, and when their machines were in use, patients were receiving inaccurate diagnoses.

By 2016, the startup’s deal with Walgreens was terminated, prompting the closure of 40 Theranos Wellness Centers at Walgreens across Arizona, and Theranos swiftly came under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Pennsylvania Department of Health and Arizona Department of Health.

Theranos had dissolved by 2018 after the SEC charged Holmes with fraud and ordered her to pay a $500,000 fine and relinquish all of her shares in the company.

Both Holmes and her former romantic and business partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, were indicted on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in June 2018.

Holmes’ defense placed the blame on others for the company’s failure, including Balwani, Theranos’ former COO, also contending he was emotionally and sexually abusive during their relationship.

Last year, after being on trial for four months, Holmes was found guilty on four counts of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison.

Balwani has already started his sentence of 13 years after being found guilty on 13 charges to defraud both investors and patients.

Her attempt to appeal the court’s decision was denied, though it did delay her sentence start time, which was set to begin on April 27.
