Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry is leaving the Big Ten school after two seasons and finalizing a 7-year deal to become the next head coach at Notre Dame, according to multiple reports.

Shrewsberry, 46, is an Indiana native who will replace Mike Brey, who retired after 23 seasons at the school, which plays in the ACC.

He went 37-31 in two seasons at Penn State, but this year the Nittany Lions broke out and went 23-14, 10-10 in the Big Ten. They reached the Big Ten Tournament championship game, losing to Purdue by 2 points, then reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Texas, 71-66.

“[Penn State] fit a lot of what I was looking for,” he told reporters last week. “It had like a great opportunity in the Midwest … I come into State College, it felt like being home. Felt like a huge part of that, and the places where I’ve been, were all pretty similar. Coaching in the Big Ten is a big deal — I grew up in the Big Ten and coaching in that is a big deal.

“But then, it’s people. People is the biggest thing for me — I am a people person, and you get a feel for that. Penn State, as large of a school as it is, it fits what I look for from my Division III background — somewhere where you can get a great education, somewhere where there are great people around you, and somewhere where you can have success. And [Penn State] fit the box for every single one of those places. And that’s why I was thrilled to have this opportunity.”

Shrewsberry attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and played college ball at Hanover College in Indiana, where he was a three-year starter and tri-captain.

He previously served as an assistant at Butler and did two stints as a Purdue assistant, while also spending six years as an assistant with the Boston Celtics from 2013-19.
